Talk Title: Will PAG Innovations Be Embraced Or Eschewed? The #scicomm Challenge Facing Agricultural Biotechnology

Talk Topic:  Innovations developed by the PAG community are often viewed negatively by the public, which threatens their translation to useful applications outside of academia. Who will step forward to tackle the scientific communication of genomic technologies for agriculture?

Bio: Dr. Alison Van Eenennaam is an animal genomics and biotechnology researcher and Cooperative Extension Specialist in the Department of Animal Science at University of California, Davis.  She received a Bachelor of Agricultural Science from the University of Melbourne in Australia, and both an MS in Animal Science, and a PhD in Genetics from UC Davis. In addition to her research into animal genomics, her active outreach program focuses on the development of science-based educational materials on breeding innovations including the controversial biotechnologies of genetic engineering (GE) and cloning. She has served on several national committees including the USDA National Advisory Committee on Biotechnology and 21st Century Agriculture, (2005-2009), and as a member of the 2010 FDA Veterinary Medicine Advisory Committee meeting on the AquAdvantage salmon, the first GE animal to be evaluated for entry into the food supply. Dr. Van Eenennaam is a passionate advocate of science and has appeared on national media including the Dr. Oz Show and the 2014 Intelligence Squared Debate on GMO food. Dr. Van Eenennaam was the recipient of the 2010 National Award for Excellence in Extension from the American Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, and the 2014 Borlaug CAST Communication Award.
